The war of 1971 gave birth to a new country – Bangladesh. It also gave birth to two young orphans – Bikram and Bala. They witnessed the war and its aftermath, where the world tried to trample over them. Fighting for survival, they clung to each other and escaped to Calcutta.

The movie is set in the troubled era of 1970’s in Kolkata then known as Calcutta where some of the most turbulent circumstances prevailed at that time. Gunday is all about two refugees Bikram and Bala, lives of whom were transformed from refugees to gun carriers and all the way up to coal bandits. The two become the most loved and celebrated individuals in Calcutta by their generosity and fearlessness. The story also includes a cabaret dancer who plays as the love interest of the two and a cop who is trying to get hold of these bandits.
